Description of work

Structural Soils appointed Drilcorp’s ‘GES’ division to assist in the extensive site investigation works for the multibillion pound development of Brent Cross. The development will eventually include 7,500 homes, 4,000,000 sq. ft. of offices, four parks, transport improvements and a 592,000 sq. ft. extension of Brent Cross Shopping Centre. GES were required to drill boreholes from 30mtr to 100 mtr and install technical installations such as wireline piezometers, inclinometers and standard gas and water monitoring wells. There was also a requirement for a detailed strata log and a Class ‘A’ sample of the ground throughout. GES design team concluded that the best method of achieving all of the clients requirements efficiently and successfully was to use Geobore ‘S’ wireline coring equipment.

How the work was carried out

Due to the hustle and bustle of London and the logistical problems that come along with it Drilcorp’s Project Management team decided to deploy the MI6 Truck Mounted Rotary rig with a large trailer designed to carry all of the required equipment. Specialist lightweight circulation tanks were fabricated to allow easy movement and handling to remove the need for mechanical lifting aids. The set up was designed in such a way that it allowed GES drilling team to move efficiently around the Capital without the use of external transport contractors, thus reducing operating costs and minimizing mobilization times to each borehole location. Drilcorp carried out the works in record breaking time and were entirely self-sufficient.
